A chapter of National Assistance League®
|
I Love to Read is a new program started in 2008-2009 to encourage reading by
elementary students in Vista. ALNC provides the incentives to the school and
the school designs and implements their own program. The program started with
two schools, Mission Meadows and Hannalei and in 2009-2010 will grow to five
schools with the addition of Lake, Crestview and Grapevine.
Students who reach certain goals receive t-shirts that say “I Love to Read and I’m
Proud of It”, and books that we purchase from Scholastic Books. The Principal at
Hannalei reported that kids came back from Spring Break with 15 new books on
their log! They get credit for reading a book as well as listening to a book. They
take their books home and read to their brothers and sisters. The school
librarian has been overwhelmed by requests for books to read. All agree that
this program is “so awesome”!
